Opinion: The germicidal effect of ambient air (open-air factor) revisited

چکیده

Abstract. The term open-air factor (OAF) was coined following microbiological research in the 1960s and 1970s which established that rural air had powerful germicidal properties attributed this to Criegee intermediates formed reaction of ozone with alkenes. We have re-evaluated those early experiments applying current state knowledge ozone–alkene reactions. Contrary previous speculation, neither nor HO radicals their decomposition are directly responsible for activity OAF. identify other potential candidates, reactions known (and likely) properties, but compounds OAF remain a mystery. There has been very little into since 1970s, effect seems largely forgotten. In opinion piece we remind community factor. Given global pandemic spread by an airborne pathogen, understanding natural effects ambient air, solving mystery determining how can be used improve human welfare should high priority atmospheric science community.

Development disorders may be arisen from the unavoidable maternal exposure to particulate air pollution during the prenatal life that can be affected not only periconceptional period but also postnatal life. A kind of chemical material categorized as air pollutants are present in the urine, blood and semen of exposed men and may decline sperm count and affect sperm quality. Environment toxic ca...

The history of ultraviolet germicidal irradiation for air disinfection.

Public health concerns such as multi- and extensive drug-resistant tuberculosis, bioterrorism, pandemic influenza, and severe acute respiratory syndrome have intensified efforts to prevent transmission of infections that are completely or partially airborne using environmental controls. One such control, ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI), has received renewed interest after decades of u...

Determination of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Ambient Urban Air

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHS) have been determined in the atmosphere of Isfahan, Iran. Airborne particulate matter was sampled using a high-volume air sampler at roof-top level (~6m). Extraction of PAHS from airborne particulate matter has been performed using SFE system and the relationship between the extraction temperature and the recovery of PAHS</su...

The Effect of Ambient Air Pollution on Sperm Quality

BACKGROUND Research has suggested an association with ambient air pollution and sperm quality. OBJECTIVES We investigated the effect of exposure to ozone (O3) and particulate matter < 2.5 microm in aerodynamic diameter (PM2.5) on sperm quality. METHODS We reexamined a previous cohort study of water disinfection by-products to evaluate sperm quality in 228 presumed fertile men with different...
